AB Active Living Challenge Day – Thursday, May 26, 2011

Be Fit for Life and the Alberta Active Living Partners hosted their annual Alberta Active Living Challenge Day on May 20.

All you need to do is to get physically active for at least 30 minutes on May 20, 2010. Walk, run, bike, swim, try something new. Last year over 60,000 Albertans participated in all sorts of activities to raise awareness about active living across the province.

So, organize a lunch hour walk or yoga session at your office. Take your kids to the park, or help your school organize an active event. Get your book club out for a bookstore bicycle tour. Then come back to our site on May 20th to register your activity and make your activity count!

Let’s get ACTIVE ALBERTA,

… here’s a suggestion!

Walk a MILE in Your Shoes for Active Living Challenge Day

It takes approximately 30 minutes for the average person to walk a mile. Why not organize your school, or your office to walk for one mile and together walk a marathon on Active Living Challenge Day in support of healthy active living in Alberta?

Make it Count
Come back to the website and log your activity after you are done so we can count you in.

More Ideas!

  • Challenge a rival school or town to see who can get the most people active. Encourage staff and students to participate and invite community members and families to get involved. The options are endless.
  • Set up a walking route and invite family, friends and community members to join you. Arrange for local seniors to join your school for the walk. As an added twist, have participants wear ethnic costumes, carry different flags or celebrate participation with food and music from around the world. Visit www.shapeab.com for more ideas.
  • Have student leaders and teachers volunteer to create activity breaks throughout the day, totalling a minimum of 30 minutes of activity. Have the volunteers lead a short activity session by using your school’s PA system.
  • Use the opportunity to get outside. Go for a walk as a school, observe nature or clean your schoolyard. Cap off the event by taking a school photo. Take advantage of having your entire student body outside and energized.
  • Set up an active challenge between the staff and students in your school. Challenge the staff to incorporate active class activities into their lesson plan for a minimum of 30 minutes on Challenge Day. How can you incorporate physical activity into a science or math class? Be creative. Have students take their heart rates before, during and after activity. Create bar graphs during math class. How about a walk to the local pond for science? Find ways to fit physical activity into your lesson plans.
  • Organize a Pep Rally and get the student body and staff moving together. Ask your leadership class to help organize a 30-minute to one-hour event. Hire a fitness leader, ask the physical education teacher or invite students to lead active sessions. Options for activities can include games, dancing, walking, outdoor activities and tai chi.

  • You need to change the April 20th above in blue to May 20th!!

posted by Schicker on May 13, 2010
  • It would seem so! The blue date is the date we posted the item. It’s a bit of a stickler when we post an event announcement, because the event is always at a later date than when we post a news item about it. If we change the blue date, then the item won’t post until the date of the event. Just one of those technical things. :)

  • Went for a walk at lunch today. Encountered two coyotes walking side by side, not sure if they were going for their lunch time break or not, but scared them off and kept going. Got my heart racing for a bit!!!!

  • LOL. There are other ways to get your heart rate up! Good for you for keeping going-here’s the Alberta Fish and Wildlife info page on what to do if you encounter a coyote
