The Impact of Sedentary Behaviour

From the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute:

Recent research suggests that the amount of time spent in sedentary behaviours (watching tv, playing video games, in front of a computer) increases the risk of overweight and obesity regardless of the amount of time spent being physically active.

Research also suggests that breaking up sedentary time with movement may help mitigate the effects. Even if Canadians reach physical activity guidelines, they may be at risk of metabolic disorders, overweight or obesity, if they also spend a large amount of time in sedentary behaviour.

Breaking up sedentary time such as extended periods of time sitting at work or in a classroom, may reduce the impacts of extended sedentary time.
