Core Competencies for CSEP-CPT™

Core Competencies

Candidates for the CSEP-Certified Personal Trainer™ accreditation are required to complete a series of introductory courses that meet each of the following seven core competency areas: (these are not course titles).

  1. Personal and Lifestyle Characteristics of Clients
  2. Motivational Techniques to Increase Client Adherence
  3. Basic Theory and Methods of Health-Related Physical Fitness Appraisal
  4. Basic Physical Activity/Exercise Prescription and Design
  5. Demonstration, Client Observation and Exercise Modification
  6. Safety, Injury Prevention and Emergency Procedures
  7. Documentation, Administration and Professionalism

In addition; university/college course work is required in ALL of the following areas:

  • Human Anatomy
  • Human Physiology
  • Exercise Physiology, Health and Performance
  • Wellness, Health Promotion and Human Behavior
  • Tests & Measurements, Communication and Counseling

Please note – completion of a (minimum) 2 year Diploma in health/exercise related sciences is required to complete the CSEP Certified Personal Trainer™
