BFFL Workplace Programs

Time to Get Off It.

We know how busy you are and we also know that no two workplaces are the same. Let our certified staff work with you to create programs, workshops, presentations and more to help busy employees find the time to get off their chairs, leave their desks or workstations and lead more active, healthy lives.

Ever Active Workplaces

Workplace wellness has moved beyond a trend to a necessity, as statistics Canada reports almost half of Canadians are overweight, and nearly one quarter are obese. This program provides support from qualified, certified fitness practitioners to plan a thoughtful activity program for your workplace. Options can include education sessions, resources, or instruction in the workplace to expand employees’ knowledge about healthy lifestyle strategies.

What is the Ever Active Workplace program?

The Ever Active Workplace program creates a work environment that continuously supports regular physical activity in its employees. It is delivered on-site, and facilitated by your area’s BFFL representative. The representative and a workplace champion or champion team collaborate to develop a customized program. All workplaces are unique: whether by job type, population, or age of workers. The planning team creates a program specific to the needs and wants of each workplace. The workplace champion team, with the aid of various partners depending on the design, delivers the program in the workplace.

This program empowers employees and management, with support from the BFFL Centre, to create an accommodating workplace environment for physical activity. Each program draws from various private, public, and community partners. Options include information, education, special events and/or challenges, presentations, demonstrations, and workplace physical activity and wellness policies.

Shifting to Wellness (Keyano College)

Shifting to Wellness is Canada’s most comprehensive shift-work lifestyle training program. Our goal is to enhance the health and wellness of employees and their families by helping them cope with the rigors of working non-traditional hours. In the end, everyone benefits when we achieve our goal; employees, families, employers, health professionals and society in general.

Shift workers have been found to experience:

  • Higher levels of sleep problems and fatigue
  • Twice the likelihood of cardiovascular disease after five years of shift work
  • Eight times the occurrence of gastrointestinal disorders such as ulcers
  • Difficulty controlling chronic diseases such as diabetes and epilepsy
  • Increased consumption of unhealthy foods, caffeine and cigarettes
  • Increased levels of drug and alcohol abuse
  • Higher rates of divorce and spousal abuse
  • Less time spent with family and friends
  • An increased sense of personal isolation

Shift-work lifestyle training programs have proven to help reduce these negative effects. That’s why more and more companies are Shifting to Wellness.

Why should we become an Ever Active Workplace?

Health Canada statistics tell us that fifteen million Canadians spend one half of their waking hours at work. By creating opportunities to be active throughout the workday, time is less of an obstacle to an active lifestyle.

60 minutes a day

Incorporating physical activity into daily life is a key determinant of health and well being. The most recent data in Alberta tells us that as many as 50% of Albertans are not active enough to benefit their health. To stay healthy or improve health, Health Canada recommends 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Physical activity does not necessarily have to be intense. Incorporating physical activity into your daily routine, including the workplace, even at 10-minute intervals, adds up to produce positive health benefits.
