What is CSEP?

The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology—CSEP—is a voluntary national organization composed of professionals interested and involved in the scientific study of exercise physiology, exercise biochemistry, fitness and health.
Who belongs to CSEP?
CSEP members are dedicated professionals who work on the proactive side of the health equation. They are educated (at minimum a college or university degree in health or exercise science). CSEP members share a vision: they are key partners in proactive health care, and are working towards helping Canadians become the most active and healthy people in the world.

Scope of Practice
Alberta CSEP certified fitness consultants have a clearly defined scope of practice which provides guidelines for safe practice within their qualifications. The scope of practice clearly sets CSEP certified personal trainers and exercise physiologists apart as the most highly qualified professionals in the industry.
What is the Alberta CSEP-Health and Fitness Program?
The Alberta CSEP Health & Fitness program was the flagship in what is now a national organization. Established in 1982 by the Alberta government to ensure public safety through the highest standards in fitness appraisal and lifestyle counselling, Alberta CSEP-HFP offers the highest professional designation within the fitness industry. Membership is recognized and supported by fitness professionals from all provinces including the RCMP and Canadian Military.

- Alberta CSEP HFP certifies two levels of fitness appraisers:
Certified Personal Trainer (CPT)
Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) - Alberta CSEP-HFP provides accreditation to fitness centres that employ CPTs and CEPs.
